KIND »
Undoubtedly, Chise's strongest impulse is kindess. She reaches out to most people she meets, despite her social anxiety; she's quick to drop everything to help someone in need; she shows compassion and empathy for the inhuman fae and even Josef, the villain of several arcs who ripped out her eye. It's not always pure selflessness that motivates her; Chise admits, self-deprecating, that she likes to make others happy because she feels more at ease when people around her are smiling. She doesn't like raised voices or violence, which is the home environment she's accustomed to. She also likes to feel that she's wanted, or that she's being useful, and helping others is the best way to get that kind of security. But the fact that she considers herself selfish doesn't change her actions or the compassion she feels for others, and it remains that she is a kind-hearted girl.

After the life she's lived -- passed around between resentful relatives who abused or neglected her, shunned and bullied by her peers -- Chise has grown into someone who is uneasy in social situations. Even at her best, she tends to be awkward, blunt, and abrupt, outright asking someone to their face why they don't like her, or just running away from a conversation with an "okay thank you bye!" when she has something else on her mind. If she's trying to get along with someone, she might fall back on stiff formality that is obviously unnatural. She gets overwhelmed by crowds, and she's more anxious about attending the College than she ever was in any life-threatening situation, her heart literally racing at the thought of being around normal people her age. She's always worried about being rejected, and even though she thinks of herself as strange, she doesn't like to hear it from others. Chise has gotten to a point where she would like to reach out more socially, but she's still more inclined to quiet time spent inside with just one person she trusts.

RECKLESS »
Whether the motive is one of kindness or self-loathing, in action, Chise is dangerously reckless -- though only ever a danger to herself, of course. She throws herself headfirst into situations often, without stopping to think through the long-term or immediate consequences. She's stubborn and headstrong to the worst extent, frequently overtaxing her already fragile body by using too much magic even when she's been scolded over and over again. She simply doesn't think before she takes action, especially if she's the only one at risk. Even after being berated by people on several occasions, she can't get herself to think any differently; she says that she knows sacrificing herself is wrong, but that she can't understand why it's wrong, and without anyone to stop her she thinks she would keep making those decisions. Elias gives her his old bolo tie specifically because he knows she'll take better care of an inanimate object that she thinks of as precious than she would herself.

SELF-LOATHING »
A large part of her reckless nature is born of a deep-seated self-loathing that Chise has held since she was a young child. As of very recently, she has finally begun to make peace with continuing to live -- actively, not just passively existing -- but in that same breath she admits that she still wishes she wasn't what she is. Chise's self-loathing and contempt for her own existence is the foundation for who she is today, built from her father's abandonment of her, her mother's attempt to kill her and subsequent suicide, the relatives that abused her, and the spirits that have tormented her all her life. From the moment her father left, right up until Elias took her in, Chise has been nothing but unwanted, and her life with Elias is only a year weighed against a lifetime. She is getting better, but the darkness she's carried until now remains a part of her.


Under pressure:

While Chise will definitely struggle to come out of her shell in a new environment without any of her familiar comforts around her; similar to her attendance at the College, she'll be struck by a level of social anxiety she hasn't had to contend with in a long while, given that in recent years she has gone from a depressed outcast to suicidal to living in an isolated English countryside cottage. She's really rusty with normal humans, and gave up on living a long time ago, so she has some adjustments to make. But on the other hand, her biggest drive is her desire to help people, and that's what's going to carry her through both the mundane and the extremes of being in Noctium.


Condition upon arrival:

Physically, she appears to be in good health. If there's any kind of magical check-up, she's a bit more of a mess — she has a curse in her left arm that is killing her, and a curse in her left eye that would make her live forever. The two seem to balance each other out, and also assist with the problem of her body being under so much magical stress that it could rupture her organs. Mentally, she'll be a bit panicked, but receptive enough to listen to an explanation from the NPCs.


Abilities:

BOTANY » She's studied to identify plants and their uses, and is probably familiar with most anything that grows in England. While botany is primarily useful for magic, she's also able to make ordinary herbal medicines as well as home remedies in the form of tea or potpourri blends.

SIGHT » Whether it's a curse or a blessing, she's able to see and interact with any sort of magical or otherworldly creature such as youkai or fae.

SLEIGH BEGGY » As a sleigh beggy, Chise's body is constantly absorbing magic from its surroundings while also generating magic itself. This makes her a magical powerhouse with a deep well of energy to draw from, but it is also incredibly bad for her health because of the stress it puts on her body. Like I said, her combined curses are the only thing stopping her organs from rupturing again. Otherworldly creatures also tend to be drawn towards her -- it's described as being similar to worker bees flocking to a queen. They like her magic, and unfortunately, it tastes good to them.

MAGUS' APPRENTICE » A trained mage, Chise is able to cast a wide range of spells. Traditionally, spellwork involves some kind of conduit and an incantation. But unlike most mages, Chise doesn't technically need the help of a familiar, fae, or other conduit such as a wand -- she uses these things because they make magic less stressful on her sleigh beggy body. She can cast by drawing from her own pool of magic, and she can cast way beyond what is considered normal because of it, even flouting the laws of nature when she's truly angry, something mages are strictly forbidden from doing. Also, her natural talent is for sleep spells, to the point that she accidentally puts Elias to sleep for days by singing him a lullaby.

DRAGON'S CURSE » The dragon's curse that resides in her left arm has not only turned the arm a solid carbon black colour, but it also gives her enhanced strength. Chise guesses that she can probably carry about the weight of two average people (so probably somewhere around 100kg) with that arm. Because it's not something she's used to, she has to be mindful of it; if her attention slips, she sometimes forgets her own strength and crushes whatever she's holding in that hand.
